Still popular with the artsy downtown crowd, the food is nominally Italian, but includes some innovative takes on everything from tuna tartar to roast lamb. As much about the scene as it is the food, if you're a starving artist and don't want to be, this is the place to get yourself fed.
Located in the lobby of the trendy Maritime Hotel, sometimes the party-hearty attitude becomes the main attraction. That's a shame, since the sashimi is among the best in the city. Hidden behind an inauspicious red door, this is a fabulous spot for a great dinner and a festive time.
Great grub without the attitude, this place has earned a reputation for quality food and excellent service. The relaxed New England d'écor is the perfect atmosphere for enjoying house specialties, like pan fried trout or roast chicken. Nothing earth-shattering, but if you're hoping from a break from the hipster scene, this could be your lucky meal.

Hit or miss American food with similar service. Always a lively scene, it's popular among literati, fashionistas and media folks. A nice menu and a fun atmosphere, the brunch is particularly notable.

A hot Indian restaurant just west of Fifth Avenue, it's definitely a step up from the usual lot of Sixth Street curry joints. Choices range from traditional marsala and Tandoori to a number of innovative seafood entrées. The chef is a veteran of the ever-popular Tamarind.
