A beloved mecca to New York film lovers, the theater itself is not actually that great. It has small screens and cramped, uncomfortable seating (a far cry from the Loews, which is a compliment, by the way). But what this multi-screen cinema complex lacks in comfort it more than compensates for in ambiance and selection. Airing some of the finest independent and foreign films ever made, this is where sad film buffs go when they need a dose of cinematic happy (or rather, chilling and thought-provoking). And, if that weren't enough, they also have a fabulous café/snack bar that makes hot dogs and artificially-flavored popcorn seem like, well, exactly what they are.

One of the few remaining independent movie theaters, Cinema Village used to be a revival house, which primarily premiered old Film Noir to releases by canonized Cannes folk. It has since been divided into a multiplex and shows some of the best foreign and independent films around.

The Comedy Cellar gets some of the biggest names in stand up. Among those featured are TV personality Colin Quinn, Kevin Brennan, Nick DiPaolo and Finesse Mitchell.

One of the better known theaters downtown, Minetta Lane is located on a quiet lane off of Bleecker Street that perfectly captures the essence of the central village.

Possibly the most famous Jazz club in existence, the Blue Note has a history of hosting legendary Jazz greats like Louis Armstrong and Miles Davis (and, of course, Woody Allen). There are, in fact, Blue Notes throughout this country as well as internationally. The New York location, however, remains a living tribute to jazz.

This theater hosts a variety of edgy, international comedy acts. Irish comedian Tommy Tiernan recently appeared here. They also hosted a popular British/Irish comedy series.
