121 Madison Avenue Location Map

Overview of 121 Madison Avenue

Located at the northeast corner of Madison Avenue and 30th Street, 121 Madison Avenue is a historically significant building designed by architects Philip G. Hubert and James W. Pirrson in collaboration with Jared Flagg. Built in 1883, it was one of the earliest cooperative apartment buildings in New York City. The building originally featured five duplex apartments every two floors, showcasing an innovative design that provided some units with bedrooms above the main living areas. Over time, the building underwent significant renovations, including a conversion to rental apartments in 1917 and further modifications in the 1940s, which included stripping away much of its original ornamentation.

Today, 121 Madison Avenue houses 127 apartments, offering a range of layouts from studios to four-bedroom units. Common features across these apartments include high ceilings, hardwood floors, and gourmet kitchens equipped with custom cabinetry and high-end stainless steel appliances. Many units also boast decorative fireplaces and ample closet space, with some offering private terraces and stunning views of the Empire State Building.

The building's rich history includes notable early residents such as William H. Harriman, a partner in the Harriman & Company banking firm, and Henry Towne, co-founder of the Yale & Towne Lock Company. Despite its transformations, 121 Madison Avenue remains a distinctive presence in the NoMad neighborhood, reflecting its architectural heritage while providing modern amenities for its residents.
