OVERVIEW

About 160 Front Street

This building at 160 Front Street was completed in 1919 as an office building for the New Jersey Zinc Company and was designed by Henry J. Hardenbergh, the architect of the Plaza Hotel. It was reportedly his last commission as he died in 1918.

The building is a few blocks south of the South Street Seaport and also fronts on Water and Fletcher Streets and Maiden Lane and it is surrounded by high-rise post-war office buildings.

It was converted to rental apartments in 1978 and has 62 units.

The building is notable for its handsome two-story stone base and a cartouche above it entrance decorated with a "horsehead," that was a trademark of the zinc company and part of the Great Seal of New Jersey.

In addition, the small cornice does not protrude on Fletcher Street.

Apartments have 10-foot-high ceilings and the building has a live-in super and a laundry in the basement.
