2 Horatio Street: CARTER'S REVIEW

This large, attractive, 17-story apartment house fronts on Jackson Square Park at the intersection of Greenwich Avenue and Eighth Avenue in Greenwich Village.

The 242-unit structure was built in 1931 and converted to a cooperative in 1987.

It was developed by Bing & Bing, one of the city's premier residential developers and designed by Robert T. Lyons. Other Bing & Bing buildings in the West Village include 302 West 12th Street, 299 West 12th Street, 45 Christopher Street and 59 West 12th Street.

The red-brick building has two very attractive bands of connected, white terra-cotta balconies across its handsome main facade.

This building has a very spectacular duplex penthouse with terraces and a fireplace and a large master bathroom on the top floor with large windows on three sides.

The building is across Greenwich Avenue from the undulating, reflective-glass residential condominium built in 2010 by Hines Interests and designed by William Pedersen of Kohn Pedersen Fox.

At the center of the far northwestern quadrant of Greenwich Village, this handsome building is surrounded by many of the landmark district's most charming streets. It also is very close to the main strip along Eighth Avenue of Chelsea, which abounds in restaurants as well as the meat packing district to the west.

Only a block away from an express subway station at Eighth Avenue and 14th Street and a few blocks down Greenwich Avenue from the West Side IRT express subway station at 12th Street, the building, just south of 13th Street, has excellent public transportation access. Crosstown buses run on 14th Street.
