38 East 85th Street: CARTER'S REVIEW

This attractive, beige-brick apartment building was erected in 1925 and converted to a cooperative in 1970.

The 13-story building has 60 apartments.

In late 1999, the white-brick apartment building directly across the street was reclad with red-brick, an improvement for the neighborhood.

This building is has a large entrance marquee that is angled upwards out from the structure. The entrance doors are bronze with a zigzag pattern. It has a one-story limestone base and permits protruding air-conditioners. It has a pleasant lobby with a terrazzo floor and a doorman and no sidewalk landscaping. It has inconsistent fenestration.

This is a pleasant, quiet block as the westbound cross-town bus crosses Central Park at 84th Street but turns north on Madison Avenue before continuing west on 86th Street. There is considerable traffic on 85th Street on the block to the west but most of it is from cars turning west on Madison Avenue to cross to the Upper West Side.

This is a good Upper East Side location as it is only one block from Central Park and is close to many major cultural institutions, religious institutions, and private schools. There are good coffee shops, two restaurants and a stationery store within a one-block walk and an express subway station and major retail stores are nearby at Lexington Avenue and 86th Street.
