955 Park Avenue CLOSE
Erected in 1915, this attractive, dark red-brick apartment building was converted to a cooperative in 1978. The facade s composition is quite strong with two-story pilasters near the top and pronounced window reveals on the third floor. The 13-story, midblock building has 33 apartments. Beneath the canopy, there is a nice fan grill in front of a marble slab above the entrance to the building's small lobby. The building was designed by Robert T. Lyons, whose other Park Avenue structures include 993 and 1155. The building, which has consistent new fenestration and protruding air-conditioners, is close to the Metropolitan Museum of Art on Fifth Avenue at 82nd Street. There are several schools in the area as well as numerous religious institutions and there is good cross-town bus service on 79th Street.
