South Pierre - 160 West 71st Street: CARTER'S REVIEW

This very attractive rental apartment building at 160 West 71st Street was erected in 1925 and designed by Maynicke & Franke.

For many years, it was known as the Almanac Hotel and was frequently used by Babe Ruth. It is now known as the South Pierre.

Its central location on the Upper West Side is one block south of an express subway station and a few blocks north of the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. It is directly across 71st Street from the Dorilton apartment building, one of the most distinguished on the Upper West Side.

There is excellent retail and many good restaurants in this neighborhood.

The 19-story building has a chamfered corner and several setbacks. The red-brick building has a tw0-story stone base and some terraces. It was converted to 298 rental apartments by the Brodsky Organization.

It has a concierge, a bicyle room, laundry facilities and is pet friendly.

The Brodskys other conversions included the Beaux Arts, twin buildings near the United Nations complex and the Croydon at 12 East 86th Street.

Its new construction projects include the Concerto and South Park Tower and a mid-rise building on the grounds of the General Theological Seminary in Chelsea.
