55 East 86th Street CLOSE
The 15-story structure has 46 apartments.
The building has an excellent location and is close to several major museums. There is very good neighborhood shopping and crosstown bus service.
The building, which has topiary plants at the entrance, has an attractive lobby with brass entrance doors, and a two-story limestone base with attractive window surrounds, pilasters and pediments on the third floor and paired windows under arched elements on the top floor beneath a cornice over rosettes. A nice feature of the building is that it continues the ornamentation of its top two floors on the 86th Street, albeit simplified and only in two-dimensional masonry, on its east facade, which is exposed above the adjoining low-rise building.
The building has a canopied entrance and a concierge.
The building is not far from an express subway station at 86th Street and Lexington Avenue and is close to several private schools and religious institutions. It has consistent fenestration and permits protruding air-conditioners.
