The Marais - 520 West 23rd Street: CARTER'S REVIEW

This handsome and large apartment building was erected in 2002 and has 107 cooperative apartments.

This 15-story, red-brick building has a two-story beige-brick base and its western edge is entirely beige-brick. The building has large windows and a setback at the 11th floor. Its façade is modulated by two slightly indented center sections. The building has an exposed rooftop watertank and no sidewalk landscaping.

It was developed by the Hudson Companies and designed by Schuman, Lichtenstein, Claman & Efron.

Two of Chelsea’s most famous landmarks are on 23rd Street, London Terrace, the full-block apartment complex between 9th and 8th Avenues, and the Chelsea Hotel.

Another attractive apartment building, the Tate at 535 West 23rd Street, a rental development, was completed about the same time as this property, just across the street.

The city is studying various proposals to redevelop the elevated "High Line" abandoned rail road tracks that are just to the east of this project. The various plans envision its sprucing up as a major recreational park, a concept that is sure to further boost Chelsea s remarkable renaissance as one of the city’s most desirable neighborhoods.

This building is not far from the Chelsea Piers recreational center on the Hudson River and there is good cross-town bus service on the street and many restaurants and art galleries in the neighborhood.
