420 East 86th Street: CARTER'S REVIEW

The character of 86th Street, one of the Upper East Side's major cross-streets, has changed dramatically in recent decades as most of its low-rise structures have been replaced by high-rise apartment towers. The Yorkville area centered around 86th Street has lost much of its ethnic German flavor, but has become much more multicultural as many new restaurants have opened to accommodate the increased population. This attractive, 7-story, Art Deco building was erected in 1929 and converted to a condominium in 1996. The 49-unit building has a part-time doorman. Located between First and York Avenues, the building is close to Carl Schurz Park and some of the city's finest schools. Although the express subway station at Lexington and 86th Street is fairly far away, there is excellent cross-town bus service on 86th Street. A major supermarket is nearby.
