519 East 86th Street: CARTER'S REVIEW

What a difference can entrance can make!

Here a simple, plain, modest, 6-story, red-brick building is transformed into a happy building because of its very elegant entrance. Pretty white columns frame a vestibule with French doors that lead into a very handsome lobby that is decorated with vertically striped wallpaper.

Very few apartment lobbies have opted for wallpaper. Here the effect is very elegant, light and very charming. It would be a fine example for the city’s Housing Authority to look at and think about applying to its many projects.

This mid-block building was erected in 1940 and converted to a cooperative in 1971. It has 36 apartments, no doorman and some comer windows. The building permits protruding air-conditioners and has a step-up lobby.

Carl Schurz Park is at the other end of this attractive and quiet block and several fine private schools are in the neighborhood. There is excellent crosstown bus service, but the express subway station at Lexington Avenue is quite far away.
