Carter Horsley's Review of Bleecker Court

Carter Horsley's Building Review
"This building, which combines old and new architecture, fronts on Mercer Street and Broadway. One of the most dynamic and interesting areas of Manhattan is Lower Broadway between the Grace Episcopal Church, where Broadway begins its angle path to the north, and Canal Street.Architecturally, this is one of the richest areas in the city, full of fascinating commercial buildings from the turn of the 20th Century and earlier. The expansion of New York University, which is clustered around Washington Square Park, and the renaissance, beginning in the late 1970's, of the SoHo and NoHo districts, both full of art galleries, boutiques and many restaurants, has revitalized this wonderful section of the city that had been relatively dormant for decades. In 1981 several older loft buildings were combined with a new 14-story building to create this project, which was converted to a cooperative in 1984. Avinash K. Malhotra was the architect. It has 242 apartments and is in the midst of this area's great bustling activity where pedestrian traffic is very high. Bleecker Street is one of the major eastbound cross-streets of Greenwich Village and a local subway station is close to this building.Washington Square Park is a few blocks away to the north and west."
