440 East 79th Street CLOSE
Occupying almost half the block between First and York Avenues, this large, 16-story, red-brick building was erected in 1956 and converted to a cooperative in 1983. It has 218 apartments. The doorman building has two small, slightly recessed "light courts" that provide for some bay windows and small planting areas on the sidewalk. The canopied entrance, which has small side lanterns, is faced with white marble that extends to about half of the building's frontage. The lobby is quite handsome and steps down to its elevator bank. There is one long balcony in the middle of the building's expansive facade on the next to the top floor. The area has convenient shopping and cross-town buses run on 79th Street, which also has a southbound entrance to the FDR Drive one block east of York Avenue. The nearest subway station is at 77th Street and Lexington Avenue and Sotheby's, the auction house, is on York Avenue at 72nd Street.
