Evans View - 303 East 60th Street: CARTER'S REVIEW

When this building first opened it was called the Uptown Memphis, but it was not related to the Memphis Downtown at 140 Charles Street, which was designed by different architects although both share a whimsical sense of decoration in reference to the Memphis design style that was popular in the 1980's.

With its little, pitched red roof, this building is one of the city's delights. Indeed, it is the city's cutest high-rise apartment tower.

The design by Gruzen Samton Steinglass and Abraham Rothenberg is very sharp and crisp and clean.

The 40-story tower, which was completed in 1985, was developed by Aaron Green and has only 157 apartments because it is quite skinny. Elliot Willensky and Norval White paid it quite a complement when they described it as "The ultimate sliver: lanky, proud, colorful, and witty," in their book, "The A. I. A. Guide to New York City, Third Edition," (Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, 1988).

The condominium tower has angled balconies with very attractive metal railings, blue air-conditioning vents, a health club and pool and doorman, but no garage.

It is by far the most attractive residential tower in the vicinity of the Manhattan approach to the Queensborough Bridge and it has very high visibility overlooking one of the city's few colorful public facilities, the tram to Roosevelt Island at 60th Street and Second Avenue.
