Overview

   About 40 East 84th Street

This white-and-gray-brick apartment house was erected in 1963 and converted to a cooperative in 1969.

The 17-story building has 62 apartments.

The doorman building has a polished black granite entrance surround and nice sidewalk landscaping. The building has some terraces and some corner windows and discrete air-conditioners. One of its retail tenants is a bank.

The building has considerable "light and air" because the buildings on the northwest and southwest corners of Madison Avenue are low-rise. To the east of the building is the Regis School and the Roman Catholic Church of St. Ignatius Loyola. There is considerable traffic at this location as the east-bound 86th Street bus comes out of Central Park at 84th Street but turns north of Madison Avenue.

Central Park, of course, is one long block away and the entrance to the Metropolitan Museum of Art two blocks further.

There is excellent neighborhood shopping in the vicinity and several restaurants.

P.S. 6, one of the city's finest public schools, is two blocks to the south on Madison Avenue.

Carter B. Horsley
