Overview

About Ageloff Towers, 141 East 3rd Street

In 1929, Samuel Ageloff built this 12-story apartment building at 141 East Third Street and a similar one just to the north on the same block at 172 East Fourth Street.

Both buildings were designed by Shampan & Shampan, who were best known for some commercial buildings in Garment Center including the 17-story Shampan Building at 252 West 37th Street that was built in 1924.

The buildings have canopied entrances beneath terracotta friezes of leashed lionesses pulling Near Eastern men.

The beige-brick buildings are known as Ageloff Towers and they stand out in the East Village neighborhood for their scale and their "uptown" detailing.

This cooperative building has 102 apartments.

The two buildings are not perfectly aligned but are very similar with somewhat crenellated rooflines and two bandcourses.

This building has a live-in superintendent, a bicycle room, a large lobby, beamed ceilings and laundry facilities and it is pet friendly.

Many of the apartments have eat-in kitchens and windowed bathrooms.
