About Plaza 400, 400 East 56th Street
This 40-story apartment tower is one of the tallest in the Sutton Place district and therefore it has many striking views of midtown and the East River.
Built in 1968, it rises without setbacks from its own plaza but its "H"-shaped plan makes it considerably more interesting than more sheer towers. Its mass is also enlivened by its balconies.
The 625 apartments were converted to cooperatives in 1981.
With an appropriately impressive lobby for a building of this size, the Plaza 400 has an excellent location that is a bit removed from the bustle of the Queensborough Bridge but very close to the charming gardens and parks of Sutton Place and the neighborhood's many restaurants. The building has a rooftop health club with swimming pool, some storage and maid's rooms and a card and party room on the 40th floor.
