Overview of North Bennington Corner at 817 West End Avenue

817 West End Avenue, also known as North Bennington Corner, is a pre-war condominium built in 1907 and converted in 2007. Designed by Neville & Bagge, it is the twin of the adjacent South Bennington Commons at 801 West End Avenue, though its darker masonry façade and the avenue's slope mean the floors don't align perfectly between the two buildings. The architects created four buildings on the Upper West Side with extraordinary rooflines, including this one, The Cornwall at 255 West 90th Street, and The Manchester at 255 West 108th Street (which unfortunately had its roofline removed).

The building has undergone extensive updates, including a restored marble lobby, new elevators, and an upgraded laundry room. Amenities include a part time doorman (8am to midnight), live-in superintendent, central laundry, private storage for rent, and bike storage. The building is non-smoking, permits pets with a maximum of two per household, and includes Wi-Fi and cable in the common charges. Located one block from both Broadway and Riverside Park, it offers convenient access to the 1, 2, and 3 trains and is near Columbia University and Whole Foods.

Apartments retain impressive turn of the century details, with ceiling heights ranging from 9 to 11 feet (most commonly 10 feet). Original features include hardwood and parquet floors, picture moldings, wainscoting, pocket doors with inset woodwork, and oak paneling with beamed ceilings in some units. Kitchens and bathrooms are typically windowed, with some bathrooms featuring classic subway tile and deep soaking tubs. Some higher floor units, particularly on the west side, offer river views and dramatic sunsets.
