About Berkley, 170 West 74th Street
This pre-war apartment building has a very central location on the Upper East Side not far from the 72nd Street express subway station.
The 12-story, red-brick building was erected in 1913 and designed by Charles E. Birge as the Hotel Berkley.
It was converted to a cooperative in 1982 and has 152 apartments.
The building has a full-time doorman, 9-and-a-half-foot ceilings, a laundry in the basement and a one-story limestone base. There are stringcourses on the 2nd, 4th, 5th and 11th floors and window surrounds on the 2nd and 11th floors. The building has a cornice and a marquee entrance.
It is also known as 287-295 Amsterdam Avenue.
It has protruding air-conditioners, no garage, no roof deck, no fitness center and no sidewalk landscaping.
