About Dag Hammarskjold Tower, 240 East 47th Street
One of the city's handsomest modern residential towers, this condominium building was designed by Gruzen & Partners for R. H. Sanbar.
"An understated tower with simple, faceted balconies, all built of preassembled brick panels, the joints of which give another design rhythm to the façade," noted Elliot Willensky and Norval White in the 1988 book, "The A.I.A. Guide to New York City," (Harcourt Brace Jovanovich).
The solid balconies are attractive, but the building's real virtues lie in its subtle massing of thin setbacks and its corner entrance. The building's corner is two-tone with its central portion a darker color than the sides. The center portion rises to a point, reminiscent of the prow of a ship.
The 43-story, 133-unit building was completed in 1984 and has a health club and pool, storage space, a garage, concierge, doorman, bicycle room, valet service and video security.
This building is very elegant like a man in a well-tailored suit from Saville Row.
