Overview

About The Paladin, 300 East 62nd Street

A paladin is a heroic figure such as one of the 12 peers of Charlemagne's court.

This building certainly has the erect, dauntless bearing of its name, slender and tall with a rather aggressive stance. There is a taut energy to its insistent serrated edges of balconies that is only somewhat softened by its rounded corner windows and that energy befits its location near the spindly towers of the Queensborough Bridge whose Manhattan entrance is a few blocks to the south.

The building is one of the better "sliver" buildings that began to sprout on the Upper East Side in the 1980's. It opened in late 1985. Although they were derided by many for the lack of context, they were rather remarkable for their resonance of the powerful magic of New York real estate.

A big attraction here is that the attractive, salmon-colored, 29-story tower, which has a concierge and doorman but no garage, has only 110 apartments. The building was developed by Joseph Mittelmann and Richard W. Berger and Liebman Liebman Associates were the architects.

Although the site witnesses considerable traffic, it also offers the convenience of a location close to midtown.
