   About Mayfair Towers, 15 West 72nd Street

This 36-story white-brick apartment house replaced the tennis courts of the adjacent Dakota apartment building in 1964.

Designed by Horace Ginsbern & Associates, the 498-unit building had the city's first incinerator-less refuse-disposal system.

Though hardly a match architecturally for the fabled Dakota, Mayfair Towers was one of the first major postwar towers on the Upper West Side and its upper floors offer fantastic views.

The central tower is flanked by two mid-rise wings and it has balconies on its east and west facades. The 72nd Street elevation is quite attractive with a vertical emphasis that runs up the full height of the tower separated by balconies on the east and west wings.

The building was converted to a cooperative in 1980.
