Overview

About The Churchill, 300 East 40th Street

This huge 33-story tower was one of the largest "luxury" apartment buildings to be erected in midtown when it was built in 1967.

The 586-unit building was converted to a cooperative in 1991.

Although this area of east midtown was known for Tudor City, the large residential enclave straddling 42nd Street at First Avenue, this tower was the first of several major postwar apartment towers to rise in the vicinity.

The tower's plain form is punctuated by many columns of protruding balconies.

Not far from Grand Central Terminal and many important city landmarks such as the Chrysler and Chanin and former Daily News buildings on 42nd Street, the building is also convenient to the United Nations.

Needless to say, the area has excellent public transportation, although traffic on Second Avenue is heavy headed for the Queens-Midtown Tunnel a few blocks south.
