The Getty, designed by Peter Marino, has been described as an “architectural sculpture” and named as the home of the Hill Art Foundation’s permanent exhibition and education space. Its focus on art and design will extend to the eight apartments spread over the nearly complete 11-story building. With its use of different kinds of stone, marble, and wood from over 80 countries, developer Victor Group says that no two apartments will share the same design. They will, however, all feature custom millwork and custom Gaggenau kitchens.

The Getty's reputation as an aesthete's paradise goes beyond the front door. It is surrounded by the galleries that brought Chelsea to prominence and one block from an entrance to the High Line, to enjoy its views and specially commissioned art. Most recently, a new large-scale mural by Berlin-based artist Dorothy Iannone. “I Lift My Lamp Beside the Golden Door,” a depiction of three new interpretations of the Statue of Liberty, has been installed one block south of the soon-to-finish condo, next to the High Line along the bare wall of a walk-up building next to the rental TEN23.

Dorothy Iannone has been described as “art’s original bad girl” for her sexually frank themes, celebration of the female sexual experience, and work resulting from her relationship with fellow artist Dieter Roth. She was at her most prolific in the 1970s but remains active and provocative into her eighties. In a statement for Art News, she said that she chose the Statue of Liberty for her mural because “she stands for beauty, for compassion, for generosity, for freedom, and for wisdom…all the things we love (or say we love).”
