Many of the grand mansions on the Upper East Side were demolished or converted to apartments in the early part of the twentieth century, but renovations have only recently begun at 39 East 72nd Street, also known as the Vanderbilt Mansion. The landmarked townhouse was built in 1881 and was once the home of heiress and fashion icon Gloria Vanderbilt. It is now getting ready to receive today's elite: Mink Development, B+B Capital, and CetraRuddy are at the helm of the efforts to restore its Neo-Grecian exterior to its former glory, add an extra floor, and to transform the inside into three luxe homes.

The first apartment, a 4-bedroom, 3.5-bath duplex, has just come on the market for $16 million. At $3,208 per square foot, it is well above the Upper East Side Gold Coast median price of $2,980 per square foot (CityRealty listings). Early reports said that the building would have a large gated courtyard in front, and we take our first look inside.
