New Pratt Residence Hall For First Year Students Will Open in 2018; Hanrahan Meyers Architects New Pratt Residence Hall For First Year Students Will Open in 2018; Hanrahan Meyers Architects
Pratt Institute is setting new standards for dorm living. Construction has begun on it's innovative new residence hall at 135 Emerson Place between Myrtle and Willoughby Avenues. The 10-story project has been dubbed "Void Tower" in reference to the building's vertical courtyard which centers student community activity on every floor. Designed by Hanrahan Meyers Architects in collaboration with Cannon Design, the building's distinctive form breaks away from typical housing and is essential in promoting Pratt's culture of invention and collaboration.

The building, which will replace an older 190-unit dorm, will be open to first-year students and is a block away from the main campus within Brooklyn's Clinton Hill neighborhood. The tower's exterior ties into the historic brick campus and area while also employing modern curved stainless steel panels. It's ground level will be utilized for social or study activities along with the "maker space" which includes studio resources. Upper floors will each contain 14 rooms (2 students per room), shared bathrooms, and a central lounge with a work counter and furniture. Other amenities include a Pratt convenience store and bike storage. The new residence hall is expected to be completed by winter 2017 and ready for occupancy at the beginning of the spring 2018 semester.

While the lot is zoned for nearly 97,000 square feet of residential space, the new building will only use 73,000 of it. According to DNA Info, Pratt bought the property for $13 million back in 2012 from Cara Development, whose original pre-recession plans included constructing a 16-story residential building (shocker) with Hudson Companies.
