A certified architectural masterpiece, 90 West Street in the Financial District was designed by celebrated architect Cass Gilbert, and was one of the city's first and finest skyscrapers when it opened in 1907. It has a sumptuous terra cotta façade in neo-Gothic styling and culminates with a modest mansard roof. In 1998, the commercial palace was designated an official city landmark by the Landmarks Preservation Commission. After undergoing a meticulous $148 million renovation after being damaged during the attacks on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, the building re-opened in 2005 as high-end rental residences.
The building has an attractive entrance marquee and a two-story arched entrance surround with sidewalk landscaping. In 2006, the building was awarded a National Preservation Honor Award from the National Trust for Historic Preservation, and the restoration of the lobby revealed original terra cotta work that had been hidden during an earlier modernization.
