This massive, white-brick rental apartment building at 401 East 34th Street between First Avenue and FDR Drive was a pioneer in the redevelopment of the East Midtown area near the Queens-Midtown Tunnel. It was erected in 1985 by the Zucker Organization and was known as Rivergate until 2014 when UDR, Inc., a real estate investment trust with more than 50,000 apartments, changed its name to View 54 and made significant upgrades to the property.

Renovated bathrooms are adorned with marble features and some units have glass walk-in showers. Other features include triple-glazed windows designed to block noise from traffic, and some units offer fireplaces or private balconies.
Amenities include a media room, a health club, a children’s playroom, an outdoor playground and garden, bike parking and private storage. Atop the pet-friendly building is a rooftop haven, offering seating areas to enjoy stunning views of the city and river. There is also valet and concierge service and a convenient 24-hour deli on site. Past View 34’s circular driveway, a 24-hour attended grand lobby greets residents. The lobby features Italian white marble, specially commissioned art pieces, a marble staircase and a glass atrium sitting area overlooking a thirty-foot high water fountain wall and fish ponds.
The property has an adjacent plaza that occupies a portion of the block on the east side of First Avenue between 34th and 35th Street, and the plaza is currently closed for renovations. In 2016, a permit was filed to construct a retail building at the site and renderings from Much Architecture indicate a restaurant may be on the way. The plaza's redevelopment also includes updated landscaping and a children's play area. When the property was known as Rivergate, the plaza was called Jospeh Slifka Park and the new building will sit on the site of a former playground.
