Roosevelt Island's 888 Main Street dates back to 1834, when it was constructed as the New York City Lunatic Asylum. Charles Dickens and Nellie Bly alike decried the horrific conditions, and the asylum closed in 1893. Now a memorial to Ms. Bly is in the works for Roosevelt Island, and the asylum has been redeveloped into The Octagon, a highly coveted rental building. Two years after the conversion was completed, the building was awarded LEED Silver certification for such environmentally friendly features as solar panels, on-site fuel cell, high-efficiency heat pumps, and Energy Star appliances.
The building is owned and managed by Bozzuto, and current availabilities start at $3,003/month for studios, $3,499/month for one-beds, $5,227/month for two-beds, and $6,267/month for three-beds. All prices are net effective to reflect up to one month free rent on a 12-month lease.

While many see Roosevelt Island as an escape from the city, the convenience to Midtown Manhattan is also something residents appreciate. Homes feature hardwood floors and floor-to-ceiling windows with spectacular city views. Kitchens are equipped with granite countertops, cherry-finished cabinetry, and a stainless steel appliance package including a dishwasher, microwaves, and refrigerator with an ice cube maker. Two-bedroom units and larger, not to mention select one-bedrooms, have a convenient in-unit washer/dryer. Select units have spacious walk-in closets and private outdoor space.

The Octagon’s attended lobby was beautifully renovated to showcase the original design, and hotel-level services include concierge, dry cleaning, laundry, and housekeeping. The heart of the development is a courtyard with an outdoor pool, grilling areas, fire pits, and expansive green space. Athletic amenities include a dual-level fitness suite with weights and cardio equipment, a yoga studio, a cycling room, and adjacent tennis courts.

Additional amenities include a coworking center with private work nooks, a club room with large-screen TV, and a game room with wet bar, billiards, and foosball tables. Younger residents have access to a children’s playroom and tween lounge, and the building offers on-site childcare and a preschool by Bright Horizons.
The Octagon is located on the northern edge of Roosevelt Island, and the building offers complimentary red bus shuttle service as well as underground garage parking, bike storage, and Zip Car service. It is close to Roosevelt Island’s bike and walking paths, waterfront promenades, and an ecological park with indigenous plantings. The Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms Park and The House at Cornell Tech, the tallest Passive House building in the world, are on the opposite end of Roosevelt Island.
