201 East 35th Street: CARTER'S REVIEW

This handsome, beige-brick building at 201 East 35th Street on the northeast corner at Third Avenue in Murray Hill has 88 rental apartments.

The 10-story building was erected in 1928 and designed by Gronenberg and Leuchtag.

There is very good public transportation in the area and The Morgan Library is nearby on Madison

BOTTOM LINE

This attractive, pre-war, rental building has a handsome entrance and a good Murray Hill location.

DESCRIPTION

The building, which is also known as 525-531 Third Avenue, has a canopied, three-step-up entrance on the side-street. The entrance is arched and adjacent to a similar arched facade element just to its east that contains a window and planting.

The building permits protruding air-conditioners and has sidewalk landscaping.

There are corner setbacks on the ninth floor and the building has quoins at its corners and arched window surrounds and decorative balconies on the eighth and night floors.

There is a scalloped bandcourse above the first floor and at the cornice lines.

The original brochure for the building from Weld & Butt, managing agents, indicated that “the roof bungalows, in addition to extra large rooms, are provided with wood burning fireplaces, adding that cheer which only an open fireplace can give,” adding that “each bungalow has its private terrace.”

There is a small north courtyard and a small east courtyard.

AMENITIES

There are some fireplaces.

APARTMENTS
