The Ascot CLOSE
This 26-story light-colored brick apartment tower is on the site of the Belmore Cafeteria, the city's most famous all-night restaurant for decades whose clientele always included many cabdrivers. The building was erected in 1984 and was developed by Peter Kalikow, who later became the publisher of The New York Post for a while. The architect was Philip Birnbaum. The building was converted to a condominium in 1988 and has 147 apartments, many with good views on the upper floors. In the heart of the Midtown South district, the Ascot is very convenient to public transportation with a local subway stop at 28th Street and excellent bus service on Park and Madison Avenues and cross-town buses at 23rd and 34th Streets. Madison Square Park is three blocks away and many popular and trendy restaurants and boutiques as well as movie theaters are nearby in the Flatiron district, one of the city's most exciting neighborhoods.
