The Whitney - 311 East 38th Street: CARTER'S REVIEW

This attractive, 28-story condominium apartment tower was erected in 1986. It was developed by Arum Bhatia Development Corporation, which also built the attractive Strand Condominiums at 500 West 43rd Street in 1989 and the Dunhill Condominiums at 401 East 84th Street in 1985.

This tower was designed by Liebman & Liebman Architects. It is notable for its pale yellow brick façade and its many balconies. It has a plaza along its eastern side, which opens up its vistas from the upper floors of the East River, views that are particularly desirable during Macy s July 4th Fireworks Displays.

The building has rounded columns on its first floor, a double-height lobby, and a concierge.

It is across the street from the modernistic apartment building at 308 East 38th Street at the southwest corner of the Tunnel Approach Road to the Queens Midtown Tunnel. It is diagonally across the Tunnel Approach Road from the back of the monumental Corinthian apartment tower, the most impressive of the luxury apartment towers that were developed in the 1980s around the tunnel’s approach.

This tower is one of several tall and spindly towers that have transformed this once low-rise area. Its many balconies give it a strong and rugged appearance and many of them have curved ends. The building has 118 apartments, a garage and a concierge.

Although there is considerable traffic in the area, this mid-block location is fairly quiet.
