Carter Horsley's Review of Mandarin Plaza

Carter Horsley's Building Review
"Lower Broadway is one of the world's greatest streets of architecture. There are, however, some buildings that do not keep its high standards. This is one of them, a minimalist, red-brick tower that is ungainly and has no contextual concerns and no architectural frills, a typical New York post-war "luxury" residential tower building that looks bad compared to most public housing. The façades are, in fact, not that bad as the fenestration pattern is not bad and there is a high ratio of windows and the roof is not flat. If one is not going to be contextual and maintain the neighbor's standards, then one ought to be innovative and have some stylistic flair. This building, which was completed in 1990, just suffers, greatly, from comparison. The 25-story, 164-unit condominium building has a concierge and doorman, but no balconies, no health club, no garage and no sundeck. It was designed by Daniel Pang & Associates for Tommy lee and William To. What a wasted opportunity at this site so close to the hip TriBeCa community and wonderful Chinatown."
