Park/Fifth Ave. to 79th St. Apartments

City Realty, Park/Fifth Ave to 79th St

One of New York's most elegant residential neighborhoods, the Park/Fifth-to-79th Street area stretches from 59th to 79th streets, running from Fifth Avenue to Park Avenue.

Bounded by Central Park and its most popular attractions -- the Central Park Zoo, the carousel, Shakespeare in the Park at the Delacorte Theater, Belvedere Castle and the Reservoir, to name only a few -- the Park/Fifth area has long been a preferred destination for well-heeled Manhattanites.

Dominated by stately and expansive pre-war co-op buildings such as 820 Fifth Avenue960 Fifth Avenue and 740 Park Avenue, Park/Fifth Avenue was once dubbed "Millionaires Mile" for its exquisite mansions lining Fifth Avenue. Though many of these homes have since been demolished, several remain, including the Frick Collection, housed in the former home of steel magnate Henry Clay Frick, and the New York Institute of Fine Arts, occupying the former James B. Duke Mansion at 2 East 78th Street.

The Park/Fifth area, which comprises the southern portion of Fifth Avenue's Museum Mile, is rich in art and cultural institutions, which, in addition to the Frick Collection, includes the Whitney Museum of American Art on Madison and 75th Street and the Asia Society on Park Avenue and 70th Street, as well as leading art galleries.

Park/Fifth Avenue

The neighborhood is perhaps best known for its world-class shops lining Madison Avenue. Here, locals and tourists alike come to shop -- or window shop -- at some of the world's finest designer boutiques, including Cartier, Gucci, Prada and Yves Saint Laurent, among others.

In addition, the area naturally boasts many of New York's most prestigious private social clubs, including the Metropolitan Club and Knickerbocker Club on Fifth Avenue, the Colony Club and Union Club on Park Avenue, the Links Club at 62nd Street and the Cosmopolitan Club at 66th Street.

For restaurants, the neighborhood is home to several elegant fine-dining establishments such as Chef Daniel Boulud's DANIEL.

The neighborhood is served by the 4, 5, 6 subway line at Lexington Avenue, as well as crosstown buses at major thoroughfares. It is also one of the best areas in the city to hail a taxi.
