A Movable Museum in the Subways

MAY 4, 2010

Arts for Transit creates an art museum experience for the millions of people who use the subway each day.

Part of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, Arts for Transit is the organization responsible for presenting visual and performing arts projects within the city’s subway system.

Permanent art projects include installations designed to create links to neighborhoods with art that echoes their architectural history as well as the design context of the individual stations. Lightbox photo exhibits showcase the work of primarily New York-based photographers. Music Under New York presents over 7,000 performances annually throughout the transit system.

Through the Poster Program, two to three artists are chosen each year to create transit-related artwork for Poster and Art Card production. The posters are randomly displayed in unused advertising space on the platforms throughout the transit system and are available to the public through sales at the New York Transit Museum Stores, which also offers “Art en Route,” a free guide to all of the art in the subway network, and Along the Way, a hard-cover tour book that makes a great gift for art and city lovers alike. You can also find an index of artists at the MTA site. This guide can tell you more about which stations feature their work, and you can find out about subway art updates on the AFT Faceboook page.
