Above It All: Modern Tree Houses

AUGUST 5, 2010

Today’s upscale tree houses are a far cry from the plywood hideouts of childhoods past.

Romero, a musician and longtime New Yorker, started his career as a treetop nest-builder when an art project he constructed for a friend in 1998 coincided with the world’s fascination with all things green. Romero Studios has since designed tree houses for Sting, Donna Karan, Julianne Moore and Val Kilmer as well as for public parks and non-profits throughout the world. His local handiwork includes a double-decker nest in Southampton and an East Village Willow Nest, built for El Jardin Del Paraiso was designed to be an observation deck and nature school for local children.

Though tree house construction has fewer rules than ordinary home-building, Romero sticks to a few: The tree must be checked by an arborist to make sure it can support the tree house, the structure can’t interfere with the growth of the tree and it must be built from salvaged materials whenever possible. According to a recent Forbes article, high-end custom tree houses like Romero’s typically cost from $70,000 to $300,000 and up. Treetop Builders also specializes in tree house design and construction.. Seattle-based TreeHouse Workshop offers specialized hardware for DIY nest-builders.
