After-School Alternatives: Cool Stuff for Kids

Get them off the internet and into some cool, creative projects.

The Creative Arts Team Youth Theater Program offers junior high and high school students a taste of theater, with improve, scene work and more. Kids 'N Comedy brings out the comedian in youngsters aged 8-16, with workshops, shows, teen programs and a comedy camp. Kids Cook Brooklyn gets even the littlest ones cooking. Pint-sized chefs (from age 2 to 6 and up) learn to measure, grate, whip, slice and knead, as they prepare wholesome and delicious dishes. Writer/Wild Thing Dave Eggers has added significantly to the range of choices for young minds with his 826NYC organization, offering free workshops, field trips and more to foster creativity and strengthen writing skills. There's even a drop-in tutoring center to help kids with their homework.

The Museum of Modern Art has a great selection of after-school programs for teens, from film, architectural and digital video workshops. The Battery Park City Parks Conservancy has a nearly-endless menu of cool activities for kids including gardening workshops and a kids' garden club, art, stories, music, sports and more.
