Alive & Kicking: Small Biz Owners Immortalized

DECEMBER 5, 2008

A drawing series at the Essex Street Market introduces shoppers to some very important neighbors.

Alive & Kicking: NYC Independent Business Owners' Illustration Series
Amid talk of "new" vs. "old" New York City, that increasingly rare breed, the small business owner, continues to flash a welcome smile—or perhaps a good-natured growl—from the other side of the counter.
At the Essex Street Market—about as old-school as it still gets, and a great experience all around–this month Illustrator Nate Padavick exhibits "Alive & Kicking: NYC Independent Business Owners," a series of portraits of 17 small business owners in New York City who keep things real despite tough economic times. Jeffrey the butcher, Moishe the baker, Felix the tailor–you may recognize their faces, are celebrated here.

Don't forget to eat at the legendarily quirky Shopsin's General Store while you're there.
