Glass mall downtown: Plans for a shiny new shopping complex to replace the existing Pier 17 mall at the South Street Seaport were announced. What we do know: The new mall will be glass-walled, with a roof garden and better views of the East River. (Tribeca Trib)

$cience project: Cornell University has emerged as the winner in the competition to build New York City’s planned high-tech science campus. In recent developments, Stanford University pulled out of the running, and Cornell reportedly received a $350 million anonymous donation for use toward their Roosevelt Island-based proposal. The hefty gift gave the school a clear advantage in bidding on the project, in part because of their willingness to put funds towards the toxic site clean-up that will be required. (via Gothamist)

Designated drivers: For the second year in a row, the city will be giving out free Metro cards and taxi debit cards worth $15 to be used by revelers who know better than to drive home. The Johnny Walker-sponsored program will be offering the cards at select New York City subway stations on scheduled dates through January 1. (NYObserver)
