Assistance Gets Personal

Find out a little more about a block, a building, the citymaybe even your neighborswhen you get your daily SmartMatch recommendations.

Can I Help You with That?
Certain high-profile fashion magazine editors are rumored to retain a flock of interns ready to scurry for the perfect latte or a last-minute schedule shuffle. Big name celebs won’t even get the mail without an entourage of assistants. Most of us secretly yearn for access to a pre-burnout intern or two when things really start to pile up outside of the office.

Enter a (relatively) new crop of professionals who can step in and help the swamped and time-strapped when they need it. A variety of agencies will put you in touch with someone who will help sort it all out for as little as $30 an hour (At the higher end, domestic staffing agencies cover this as well.).

In addition to standard concierge items (including ticket finding and reservation-making, packing and unpacking, bill-paying, event planning and de-cluttering) there appears to be no task these pros can’t take off your hands. In New York City, uNameIt! Organizers lists Telephone Waiting and Replacement of Sentimental Objects among several columns of services. Sande Nelson's Get Organized offers to help manage your stamp collection. Cross it Off Yor List offers “Lifestyle Management” including “Finding hard to find items.” Lambent Services offers “Exercise enforcement.” There’s even a National Association of Professional Organizers (NAPO) to provide resources for people who want to pursue a career in the business of making life easier for you.

So you can now hire someone to wait in line for you at the DMV, the Post Office, or to get that new iPod, sit on endless phone-hold with the cable company, even make sure you don’t make a detour to the bar on the way to the gym.
