Barnyard 2.0

JUNE 24, 2010

The newest crop of critter condos, coops and cottages makes life easy for urban farmers.

Some (p)lucky chickens won’t be cooped up in any old henhouse. Featured recently on design trend site Cool Hunting, these modernist A-frame Chicken Cribs appeal to a new breed of urban farmer. With an egg door for easy harvesting and handles for convenient transport, the cribs are catching on with hip chicks everywhere. The Eglu (from the cleverly-named Omlet company) is another variation on the beyond-the-barnyard theme, with more designer colors, fox-proof construction and room for ten. There are even versions for bunnies and bees: The appropriately sleek Beehaus apartments arrive stacked with all the right components for post-millennial beekeeping.

Cat ladies (and men) are encouraged to give their favorite felines room to roam while keeping them safe (and away from the chickens); the “catio“—an extension of paw space beyond the porch—or tiny city balcony—is becoming a popular pet perk (via NYTImes). Your pet doesn’t even have to stay put; this pet stroller resembles those familiar big-ticket baby-moving machines with the added security of a screen to discourage escapes.
