Beyond the Balcony

Out There: Unusual Outdoor Spaces
We’d all love a little outdoor space to call our own. Some lucky New Yorkers get a few—or a few hundred—square feet of balcony or rooftop but there are a few out-there outdoor spots that might make you do a double take.

The rounded, glass-enclosed, greenhouse-like "wintergarden" rooms at the Galleria condominium expand residents’ living rooms into the sky. One of the more distinguishing features at 101 Warren Street is an in-house sanctuary known as the Artrium, where a private pine tree forest and a lush boxwood maze offer residents an oasis above the Tribeca streets. The Roof Club and Garden at the Gramercy Park Hotel features a retractable glass roof in addition to a landscaped courtyard space. In the Meatpacking district, the Aurora Gallery hides a 2,000 square foot private patio located underneath the Historic Highline.

And could any city view compete with the swoon-inducing penthouse balconies at the famous Pierre? The Four Seasons Hotel occupies the building’s lower floors, but the highest floors are home to what is arguably the most desirable address in the city. The duplex penthouse, with its 360 degree panoramic views and open-air terraces, has been synonymous with New York City fantasies since the building’s glamorous Deco days of the 1930s.
