Beyond Books: The New York Public Library Changes with the Times

OCTOBER 6, 2009

The New York Public Library (NYPL) has been working to keep pace with changing media and information delivery systems and remain a valuable repository and a useful resource for everyone.

To that end, the NYPL unveiled a $1 Billion transformation plan in 2008 which includes a dramatic renovation of its Fifth Avenue home base to become a "Model for the Urban Library of the Future," comprehensive increases in its digital collections and ways to access them, and two new "hub" libraries in Staten Island and the Bronx.

The NYPL system was one of the first large library systems to put its entire catalogue online. Through its award-winning Digital Gallery, the Library has scanned nearly 700,000 images from its original, rare and specialized holdings, making them available free to the public. NYPL Labs was launched to create and test new ways of delivering information to meet the needs of users wherever they may be. Regular materials available in digital format include an impressive collection of eBooks and audiobooks. The eNYPL system makes it easy to browse and check out downloadable materials; a Wireless Library lets you access materials from your wireless handheld device and there's even an iTunes application and a YouTube channel.
