BLK DNM: A New Pop-Up Denim Shop from a Fashion Insider

JULY 15, 2011

Johan Lindeberg, the man behind fashion-cult preppy label J. Lindeberg, launched his new denim label, BLK DNM in March of this year. A world away from the polo-and-loafers chic of his eponymous label, BLK DNM features elegant simplicity in drapey tees, tough leather jackets and an impressive collection of denim (the high-waisted jeans are a hit) marked by number rather than name. The line is a compelling entry in the already-crowded world of “pared down” designer denim-based basics like Rag & Bone, Acne and J. Crew spinoff Madewell.

In early June, Lindeberg opened Pop 1 NYC, a temporary store in the former In.ventory space at 237 Lafayette street. The shop, heralded by handbills posted in hip neighborhoods throughout the city, immediately had fashionistas buzzing and making a beeline. A gleaming chocolate wood floor provides polish to the loft-like white walls, plywood and metal pipes that frame the shop’s cool merchandise, while a big persian rug, broken-in leather sofas and potted palms add a comfort zone. Lindeberg himself sports a long, shaggy artist’s beard and resembles nothing so much as a hip, nerdy biker, and though his design aesthetic has seen a shift away from the sporting life, his new label still offers the subtle, well-cut, on-trend blazers, trousers and shirts that seduced his stylish-insider following.

Local creative notables—and friends of the designer—like Waris Ahluwalia, Wes Anderson, and Terence Koh have joined Lindeberg in making the label as much cultural endeavor as retail emporium by contributing to Gazette 1, a broadsheet magazine available in-store. Pop 1 NYC will be open through July (possibly longer), but look for more fab collabs and a permanent new location soon.
