Bottlerocket: Wine with Spirit
As a recent trend in New York City wine shops takes the seriousness and snobbery out of buying wine, Bottlerocket in Chelsea may be the most lovable of the bunch. In addition to the usual arrangement by country of origin, featured wines are organized by the events and foods that you’d complement with them. Less serious categories include “Take-Out” (Chinese, Indian, Thai, Mexican and BBQ meals)—with a stack of local
menus to illustrate—and Gifts (“Third Date,” “Your Boss,” “Someone You Barely Know”) as well as the tried-and-true fowl-fish-red meat breakdown.

Helpful staff are always ready to educate, prices range from $6 to $285 and there are ratings and tasting notes for most offerings. The store also features offbeat events like book-signings as well as shelves of books and magazines, a play area for toddlers and a warm welcome for dogs. In-store classes include “How to Navigate a Restaurant Wine List.”  Wine tastings are held every Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 5pm to 8pm.
