Bounced: The Toughest Door Policies in the City

FEBRUARY 8, 2011

The city’s hottest nightclubs get the velvet rope test.

New York City club life is a moody milieu—what’s hot today will undoubtedly be tomorrow’s old news. And the coveted exclusivity enjoyed by those at the top of the ephemeral pile feeds the fire. Eater’s Door Report assembled a cheat sheet of—for a moment at least—the city’s toughest doors for aspiring (mostly) MePa scenesters. The Jane Hotel Ballroom appears to be the skyscraper of tough-to-scale entry policies. Next on the list are the infamous Boom Boom Room at the Standard, Provocateur in the Gansevoort, Simyone Lounge, and Avenue, followed by runners-up Rose Bar, 1OAK, Gold Bar and Cabin.

The NY Post subjected a few of the city’s reputedly more selective velvet ropes to a real-life stress test. Posing as suburban dad, geek, guido and guidette and cougar, intrepid actors hit the hotspots. The results? All were banned from the Boom Boom Room; Avenue proved tough as well. Older clubs like Marquee and Griffin proved to be more democratic, eventually allowing entry to most or all of the ersatz nightcrawlers. In a similar experiment, Eater dispatched its own operatives to Provocateur, where “Brenda” and “Natasha” were carefully culled and sent on their way. Read more from the Eater Door Report.
