Brooklyn Bowl: A New Take on an Old Favorite

JULY 10, 2009

Brooklyn's newest nightspot features green construction and a Blue Ribbon menu.

Bring your bowling shoes or just an appetite for music, comfort food and local beer—this week Williamsburg rolls out yet another way to stay entertained. Brooklyn Bowl, the latest addition to the Wythe Avenue party zone, is a bit different from the average 'Burg band bar. The bowling alley-cum-restaurant-and-music-venue is the long-awaited project of Peter Shapiro (former owner of Manhattan club Wetlands), and features a menu—which will debut on August 10—courtesy of Blue Ribbon restaurant, as well as a full bar and local brew.

The new club, housed in a 23,000-square-foot former iron foundry, is one of a few vanguard establishments of its kind that has attempted to adhere to environmentally responsible standards with LEED-certified construction. Some examples: A stage made out of recycled tires, motion-sensors that regulate bathroom lighting, low-water-use toilets, and LED lighting—which uses less energy—onstage.

Brooklyn Bowl opens its doors Friday, July 10 for its first music event, featuring local rockers O'Death, DJ Eamon Harkin and others. In keeping with its stroller-struck environs, there will be child-friendly weekend days later this summer in addition to extended hours in which to work on getting your ball out of the gutter.
