Brooklyn Superhero Supply Co. Helps Kids Fly

JULY 28, 2009

A baffling Brooklyn storefront conceals some very special superpowers.

Even at first glance, the website—not to mention the storefront—of the Brooklyn Superhero Supply Co. headquarters will make you do a double-take as you try to figure out what "capes," "secret identities," "lairs" and other off-world necessities really are. The mastermind behind this purveyor of "high quality crime fighting merchandise" is author and education activist Dave Eggers.

The highly unusual storefront is a real front for the New York outpost of his groundbreaking afterschool creativity program, 826 National. 826NYC is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping kids aged 6 to 18 with creative and expository writing skills and to giving teachers new ideas about how to help kids learn to write. The organization also offers field trips, events, scholarships and more to give young scribes a jump-start. The Brooklyn storefront alone inspires awe in kids young and old with typical Eggers-style (he also publishes the dry-witted literary journal McSweeney's). Check out Eggers answers to more questions about the organization here.
