Building a Greener City

FEBRUARY 4, 2010

A city task force addresses the challenge of making greener buildings a reality.

We hear the accolades aimed at brave new buildings that are raising the standard for sustainability and environmental awareness. But official standards and codes that apply to all buildings are just beginning to be formed. With a panel of experts—representatives of the building industry and environmental organizations that make up the Green Code Task Force—Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and the City Council recently presented over 100 suggestions on how to make New York City’s building codes more environmentally sound.

Included in the suggested guidelines are regulations for insulating glass towers and a plan that would allow temperature to be controlled by each unit in residential buildings. Read other suggestions among the many mentioned in the Green Codes proposal.

The city’s goal is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 30 percent by 2030. The recommendations haven’t yet been approved by the City Council, but their creation is a good move down the road to a greener city, and the Task Force plans to keep working on ways to refine and improve them.
